Black Horse Brewery now Category 1 Historic Place
It is with great pleasure that we announce the registration of Hart’s Black Horse Brewery, Weatherstons as a Category 1 historic site with New Zealand Historic Places.
The Brewery, including the daffodil fields meets five of the values necessary for registration and seven of the criteria for Category 1. These historic places are ‘places of special or outstanding historical or cultural heritage significance or value'.
Representing the culmination of eight years of research and lobbying for recognition the registration is significant to allowing us to see the vision through to fruition – with lots of fundraising.
None of this would be possible without the generous support of our many sponsors – Otago Community Trust, COGS, Community Post, Lawrence Lions, Tuapeka Gold Print, Balclutha Round Table, Little Red Hen Trust and local contractors.
Craig Morrison saw the vision at the beginning and dove into the project with unmatched enthusiasm, spending countless hours ensuring each goal is met as well as inventing machinery and equipment specific to the needs of the site. What we see today is a credit to him.
The Department of Corrections provide a site development & maintenance crew. This crew works manually over the 25 acre estate, tackling gorse, broom & blackberry eradication, respecting the unique plant species found on site while enduring challenging weather and terrain to give us the matchless vista available today.
With Craig Morrison’s guidance they have created top quality paths enhancing access around the estate, which are now graced with information panels that are designed to inform and intrigue.
This spectacular site is open for viewing year round with an honesty box to collect entry fees –
$5 Adults, $3 Senior/Student/Unemployed Concession, $2 Children (under 5 free) – It is beautiful right now with Autumn colours bringing a special warmth to the site.
Volunteers are essential to projects like ours, without them the site would still be strangled with gorse and blackberry fading into the realms of myth and legend.

The register entry (9598) will be available online from 15 March at www.historic.org.nz

WE MADE IT THROUGH 2011
2011 has been a very long year full of events and projects. From volunteering on the gate of the Lawrence Summer Arts Festival, being a part of the Drama of the Tuapeka & Gabriels Gold Rush 150th celebrations, taking photos of the Quarter Mile, hosting the Wish Lantern Walk and Hart of Gold Family Reunion, organising the Time Capsule, entertaining at RWNZ & NZWI Co-Ord Day, to utilising our tracks for the Lawrence Duathlon on Country Fair Day.
We have completed our website upgrade thanks to a grant from Otago Community Trust, and, with support from Lawrence Lions, R&R Contracting and Toko Timber we have made advances on our signage project. We offer special thanks to Sharon Bayne and Mark Robbie for their time in creating and placing our new signpost with such precision, it is perfect. Also, to Tuapeka Gold Print for the quality branded promotional items we now have available. We are grateful for COGS continued support with a $3,000 global donation for 2011-12.
Our Weatherston & daffodil naming projects are underway, with more research and consultation required before completion.
It was an honour to be a part of the REAL NZ Festival and thanks to a grant from the 2011 FLF Lotteries Fund, we were able to step up to the mark and produce a quality event. In appraising our successes this year, in particular the RWC influence, it has been another interesting learning curve. We didn’t see many RWC travellers, but those we did see were well satisfied with their experience and came from all over the world. The other main impact of the RWC was the school holidays being moved; we missed the families we would normally see during our peak times, although the fabulous promotion through the Spin It Wide Campaign allowed us to reach a larger audience.
Carnivale Dayze was magnificent and everything we envisaged bringing magic and myth to the Brewery. People stayed all day, we had to use three paddocks to accommodate the parking and despite snow being forecast, we had over 500 through the gates. The fauns were perfect – leading children down garden paths and through the wardrobe, was straight out of Narnia. (Thanks to funding from Creative NZ)
Sincere thanks to all our sponsors and supporters who help make our Dayze brighter.

CARNIVALE DAYZE
Thanks
It was with much trepidation over the forecast bad weather that we all peered out the window as we prepared for the day - only to find blue skies and golden fields awaiting us.
With more than 600 people enjoying a magical, mystical day the sun kept fighting through the clouds. (My mother always says a good event manager could control the weather.)
The special atmosphere kept people enthralled for hours enjoying a full entertainment programme and many wandering delights. Check out our gallery & facebook for more photos.
Thanks to the magnificent team of volunteers who ensure the smooth running of our event - you make our Dayze brighter.
The daffodils have not yet reached full bloom - don’t miss out on this spectacular sight.
