Sport Southland Our Sport Southland Kiwi Seniors walk group took two busloads of eager, keen and physically active seniors on a Mystery Trip.
The day had been planned to incorporate a walk at Gabriels Gully prior to lunch at Weatherstons Black Horse Brewery.
As we ventured into the valley - the look of amazement from my walk group said it all. There was silence, followed by clapping and then continual chatter of excitment as they met Kim 'Dusty' Murtagh. Kim'e enthusiasm and love of the area was evident in the work that she and Craig have put into clearing, repairing and restoring this magnificent area of history. The magnificent and painstaking work recovering, unearthing and cleaning is definately due to Kim & Craig's relentless drive to provide others with evidence of the past and they are to be comended for their perserverance.
Further to my amazement - not one of my walkers or even our well travelled bus drivers knew about this historical site and all were captivated by the spectacular and colourful fields of daffodils and buildings, not to mention historical information presented by Kim.
What was to be an hour stay - soon became two as walkers fossicked and meandered among the fields, absorbing the atmosphere of the relics of days gone by.
It is absolutely imperative that funding for this historical site be continued and retained, as New Zealand is "young at heart" and needs this type of history to be recorded and restored, as too much has been buried forever.
Sport Southland would like to support and recommend the continuation of this venture.

Canterbury Caper - Vintage Car Club Our touring Vintage Car Club group who recently came your way wish to express their pleasure at your very delightful presentations at Weatherstons and Lawrence.
This certainly was an unexpected highlight of our 10-day tour of Central Otago’s Goldfields.
The event has been reported to our national magazine, Beaded Wheels and will be published in due course, complete with action photos of you and your banjo-man! The atmosphere you recreated put us right back in the past so that we could almost see the hard men with their women returned to party at the old Brewery!
This ‘secret’ place deserves the preservation and exposure you are giving it, as an untouched goldfields rediscovery. New Zealanders as well as visitors will come to learn and understand that the heritage is Lawrence, Gabriel’s Gully and Weatherstons through your professional and warmly entertaining presentations.
Please accept our grateful thanks for making our day!
