2011 has been a very long year full of events and projects. From volunteering on the gate of the Lawrence Summer Arts Festival, being a part of the Drama of the Tuapeka & Gabriels Gold Rush 150th celebrations, taking photos of the Quarter Mile, hosting the Wish Lantern Walk and Hart of Gold Family Reunion, organising the Time Capsule, entertaining at RWNZ & NZWI Co-Ord Day, to utilising our tracks for the Lawrence Duathlon on Country Fair Day.

We have completed our website upgrade thanks to a grant from Otago Community Trust, and, with support from Lawrence Lions, R&R Contracting and Toko Timber we have made advances on our signage project. We offer special thanks to Sharon Bayne and Mark Robbie for their time in creating and placing our new signpost with such precision, it is perfect. Also, to Tuapeka Gold Print for the quality branded promotional items we now have available. We are grateful for COGS continued support with a $3,000 global donation for 2011-12.

Our Weatherston & daffodil naming projects are underway, with more research and consultation required before completion.

It was an honour to be a part of the REAL NZ Festival and thanks to a grant from the 2011 FLF Lotteries Fund, we were able to step up to the mark and produce a quality event. In appraising our successes this year, in particular the RWC influence, it has been another interesting learning curve. We didn’t see many RWC travellers, but those we did see were well satisfied with their experience and came from all over the world. The other main impact of the RWC was the school holidays being moved; we missed the families we would normally see during our peak times, although the fabulous promotion through the Spin It Wide Campaign allowed us to reach a larger audience.

Carnivale Dayze was magnificent and everything we envisaged bringing magic and myth to the Brewery. People stayed all day, we had to use three paddocks to accommodate the parking and despite snow being forecast, we had over 500 through the gates. The fauns were perfect – leading children down garden paths and through the wardrobe, was straight out of Narnia. (Thanks to funding from Creative NZ)

It was with much trepidation over the forecast bad weather that we all peered out the window as we prepared for the day - only to find blue skies and golden fields awaiting us.

With more than 600 people enjoying a magical, mystical day the sun kept fighting through the clouds. (My mother always says a good event manager could control the weather.)

The special atmosphere kept people enthralled for hours enjoying a full entertainment programme and many wandering delights. Check out our gallery & facebook for more photos.

The return trip is over the hill from Waihola to see the lovely roadside daffodils coming back along the coast.

We invite you and your families to the Back Horse Brewery while once again it is resplendent with colour.

We honoured to be involved in the REAL NZ Festival and Spin It Wide Campaign – showcasing New Zealand’s heritage & culture from September 3rd – November 30th.

Join us for Carnivale Dayze on Sunday September 25th, when the crew dress in costume creating an atmosphere of olde world charm that will leave an unforgettable impression on all who visit.

Offering assorted activities and entertainment to satisfy a diverse range of interests. We are joined this year by Magician Jonathon Usher, Can Can Girls, Fortune Teller Belly Dancers, Bagpipes & Banjo, Tailed Poi Dance, and other diverse entertainment. We have Beer Tasting, Girdle Scones, Hot Potatoes, Souvenirs, Historic Displays, Local Art & Photography, Music, Stalls, Real Leaves Dipped In Gold, and of course – The Wenches of Weatherstons.

We are offering a bus service from Dunedin for the day at only $10 return – leaving the Dunedin Railway Station at 10am & 11am.

EFTPOS is available on site all season.

Our volunteers have made a huge contribution to our programme this year and we can’t thank them enough for their commitment to this magnificent estate and the values it stands for.

Special lighting of the ruins, walkways and waterfall after dark have created a magical ambiance amongst the inherent majesty and tranquillity of the site and captured every aspect that we love about this place, which was a delight to share with our guests. (My favourite comment was that it was like walking into the gypsy scene from the movie "Chocolat") Contact us if you would like to book an evening function.

We again host the walk/run section of the Lawrence duathalon on November 7th – so get your entry in quick for this unique & challenging event.

Volunteers are essential to projects like ours, without them the site would still be strangled with gorse and blackberry fading into the realms of myth and legend.

Hart of Gold Family Reunion

What an honour to host the Hart of Gold Family Reunion.

In a full weekend of celebration and family, it gave us an opportunity to learn more about the site and the people who treasured it.

About 80 descendents of Benjamin & Mary Hart gathered onsite to share stories and investigate the town where their forebears made an indelible impression.

We look forward to a growing association with the Hart Family.

Wish Lanterns at the Brewery

Children of all Ages gathered at the Brewry to build lanterns depicting their wishes for the future.

The annual Wish Lantern Walk is organised by Lawrence resident Kirsty Garner as a chance to celebrate changes in our lives and wishes for the future. After a shared meal, the group lit their lanterns and walked through the magically lit woodland garden walks singing celebration songs for the end of daylight savings.
